5k to Protect the Bay

Come experience a 5k like no other in RI! The 1st Annual 5k to Protect the Bay takes place on preserved land that is part of the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, based on Prudence Island. Enjoy a flat and fast course on a mix of paved and dirt roads with breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay. You will run through a mix of wooded roads, alongside coastal meadows and start and finish along the shoreline of Prudence Island. The race supports the conservation, education and stewardship work of the Reserve and it's a great way to see Prudence Island. Make a day of it by taking the ferry over to Prudence, view some of the most beautiful natural habitats in RI and run a fantastic race!

Event schedule and times:

Participants will take the 10am ferry from Bristol, RI arriving on Prudence Island at 10:30am. A bus will take all participants down to the race site at the south end of the island. The 5k race will begin at 11:45am and the 1 mile walk will begin at 12pm. Award ceremony will be at 1pm (due to island logistics, this might vary slightly). The bus will return participants back to the ferry landing; participants can choose to depart on either the 2pm or 4pm ferry. Snacks and water will be available but it is recommended that if you stay until 4pm that you bring additional food as there are no restaurant or food service options on the island. We'll have great raffle prizes to give out while we wait for the awards ceremony to begin!

Course Info:

The course is fast and flat, with only one moderate incline. There is a mix of paved and dirt roads, all of which take you through beautiful forests, coastal meadows and alongside the Bay. You are rewarded with spectacular views during your run! Visit our website via the more information link to view the map.

Waiver:

You will be asked to sign a waiver when you arrive at the race site to pick up your bib number. Due to island logistics, there is no pre-race day packet pick-up

Parking:

Parking in Bristol is available at 2 municipal lots (both are free) and both are located on Thames Street, near where you get on the Prudence Island Ferry.

Transportation:

The cost of your ferry ticket is included in your registration fee. There will be a race volunteer at the ferry landing to provide you with your round-trip ticket upon arrival. Once on the island, a bus will transport participants to the race site.
